DISREGARD NEWS OF COMPULSORY ‘AKWAABA INSURANCE POLICY FOR INTERNATIONAL TRAVELERS – NIC

The National Insurance Commission (NIC) which regulates the insurance sector in Ghana, has described reports that all international travellers arriving in Ghana by the end of March this year will be expected to sign on to a compulsory insurance cover known as the ‘Akwaaba’ insurance policy, as untrue.

Media reports suggested that the said product was to be implemented by three of the leading insurance companies in the country, that is, the State Insurance Company PLC (SIC), Enterprise Insurance, and GLICO Insurance Company.

The Managing Director of SIC Insurance PLC, Stephen Oduro is quoted as explaining that every traveller coming into Ghana will be required to purchase the insurance regardless of the duration of stay and nationality.

But a release by the National Insurance Commission, copied to Citi Business News, urged the general public to disregard the said Akwaaba Insurance scheme as it had not been approved by the Commission.
